What is Fretboard Theory?

It is the subject of knowing the musical notes on the guitar and how to associate musical patterns/phrases across the fretboard.
The most important aspect of learning fretboard theory is application. There is really no point in learning frethoard theory without actually picking your guitar up and trying out the concepts.
Here are the main objectives:
1. Merging different systems together to identify notes quicker [navigating by octaves, landmarks, caged theory]
2. Understanding solos in terms of note recognition, to rely less on tabs. Recognising fragments/patterns used by guitarists
3. Huge role in improvisation, to improve playing on the spot
Is Fretboard Theory only applicable for Electric Guitars? And not Acoustic Guitars?
Fretboard theory can definitely be applied to acoustic guitars as well. The only concern would be situations where you do not have upper fret access on certain acoustic guitars. But besides that, everything can be applied as long as the guitar is still in standard tuning. [At least for the topics that I cover here.]
